What Do You Have in Common With American Idol Kelly Clarkson? Insomnia

It is always a comforting feeling to know that we are not alone when we suffer through something. But what is even more comforting to realize is that our favorite celebrities, who are constantly admired in the public eye, share the same problems that us regular folks have.

It would make sense that someone as famous as singer Kelly Clarkson would suffer from sleepless nights. People in the public eye have to constantly prepare for a concert or event, and are always concerned about their appearance and overall image. Is it any wonder that they get any sleep at all?

Kelly Clarkson rose to fame after winning the first season of American Idol in 2002. This was a far cry from her life as a waitress in Texas, so things changed drastically for her in a short amount of time. Since then, she travels from city to city, and is in and out of the studio working on her next hit song.

Between jetlag from touring, constantly finding time for creativity, and maintaining some semblance of a social life, Ms. Clarkson must be tired. We know that jetlag can provide severe setbacks in our sleeping patterns, and bouts of insomnia can ensue after a great amount of traveling. So, if someone is not only traveling across time zones within the country, but all over the world, this could prove to be quite tiresome. However, because Kelly is so busy, she does not always have the time or circumstances to take in a full night of sound sleep.

Kelly Clarkson recently admitted to an online British publication that she does in fact struggle often with short-term insomnia. She is known to write many of her own songs, and she feels that the nighttime always provides the best impetus for the creative process. Because she stays up so late completing a great chunk of her work, her sleeping habits might tend to be scattered.

If someone with Kelly Clarkson's fame and money can suffer from something like insomnia, it is no surprise that millions of people do as well. While we may not do as much traveling out of the country as she does, many of us feel that if we stay up later, we can get much more work accomplished. With our busy schedules and constant worries, it is no wonder that the average person only receives about five hours of good solid rest.

The next time you think it abnormal that you are up until all hours of the night, consider that Kelly Clarkson could be up at that very minute, working on her next multi-platinum-selling album.

The Thrill is Gone For Me - Why I Do Not Watch American Idol Anymore

I remember I used to have to rush home every Tuesday and Wednesday from the office, just so that I could watch dreams being made or shattered on American Idol. I even watched the night that Simon Cowell had some not so nice things to say to now, Academy Award winner, Jennifer Hudson. I remember many of the seasons as if it were yesterday, but this season, I do not know any of the contestants names, I do not know the name of the newest judge added to the roster, and while I have been seeing hoopla on the Internet surrounding the final episodes, I just cannot bring myself to turn to American Idol this year.

Maybe I have lost faith in the set up of its system, maybe I do not believe that once a person has won, they will go on to do anything greater than most of the other contestants - with the exception of Kelly Clarkson and Clay Aiken, and the 'non-winner,' but truest winner of them all, Jennifer Hudson, who was not fed the pipe dream story of going on to this glamorous record deal upon winning. I really cannot put my fingers on when and where the Idol mechanics changed for me, but all that I know is, is that they changed.

If I had to speculate why I am harboring such pessimistic feelings about A.I., I would have to say that it is not fair how a person can become an American Idol statistic, after being praised and glorified so heavily on the show, then after their win, a few months later, you never hear about them at all. So, you mean to tell me that I spent a whole few months rushing home to see who is going to win week after week, until we get to the finale, then a winner is chosen, and that's that? Somehow, I feel cheated, I feel as if I could have spent my time doing something other than watching for a winner that will not be heavily promoted once their stint on A.I. is up. I guess I really stopped seeing the logic in it.

Well, no matter who wins this season, I hope that all of those that vied for the coveted winner's spot, realize that their dreams do not end there, and that they should persevere on to other things...their lives do not begin and end with American Idol, and apparently, neither does mine.

The First The American Idol Kelly Clarkson

There is a lot more to the story that meets the eye, at least, where Kelly Clarkson, the American Idol, is concerned. Her rise to the top of the charts was not an easy one and any struggling singer-wannabe can probably identify with the grit and determination this young pop singer has shown. Kelly Clarkson was born Kelly Brianne Clarkson April 24th 1982 in the small town, Burleson in Texas.

Despite her very obvious talent on stage, her first ambition as a child was to become a marine biologist but watching the show "Jaws" scared her off her career. With her dreams dashed, she was clearly open to suggestions and when a teacher in her school, Pauline Hughes, heard Kelly Clarkson's rich voice, she was encouraged to join the school choir. And from there, Kelly Clarkson is smitten with singing. Kelly Clarkson soon upgraded her singing portfolio when she was included in the Texas All-State Choir.

Even with a voice like hers, she still failed to sell herself to record labels and having no luck at home, the far-sighted Kelly Clarkson saved up enough money from odd jobs as a pharmacy assistant, telemarketer, waitress and assistants in a movie theatre and the zoo, she managed to send herself to California.

In the land of Movie Stars, she landed herself as an extra in the popular TV series "Sabrina" and found herself working with the famous songwriter, Gerry Goffin. Apart from these minor roles, a record deal was not forthcoming. With Mr. Goffin falling ill, her roommate moving out and her apartment burning down, Kelly Clarkson packed her stuff and headed on back home.

Although Kelly Clarkson found a STABLE job as a promoter for Red Bull to help pay the bills, she has not given up on her dream. And when a friend told her that there was going to be a singing contest where the public gets to vote on the winner, she gave it a shot. Kelly Clarkson didn't have high expectations for this contest; with the memory of her failure to get a record deal still fresh in her mind. PLUS she was going to be pitching against 10,000 other talented Americans.

But what a surprise it was for Kelly Clarkson when her rendition of Aretha Franklin's "Respect" floored the judges. And it was only at that point in time that she realized that she really DID want to win! Feeling revitalized and motivated again, her rendition of Franklin's "You make me feel like a natural woman" won even the praise of the most notorious American Idol judge, Simon Cowell.

Her first single, "A Moment Like This", was released October 2002 and it jumped straight from No. 52 to No. 1 on the Billboard starts, creating history! The jump was noticeably bigger than the jump that the Beatles' "Can't Buy Me Love". "Can't Buy Me Love" only jumped from No.27 to No.1. Kelly Clarkson is now known around the world as the first ever American Idol who has her own brand of down-to-earth charm and a sense of humor to match. People can relate to Kelly Clarkson because we have watched her rise from a 'nobody' to the 'somebody' that she is today.

We know it's hard to tell when it comes to the staying power of pop stars but with Kelly Clarkson, we believe that she may be here to stay....

American Idol - Does Gender Play A Role?

Seems like every time I turn the radio on, Jordin Spark's Tattoo is playing. And the odd time I flip on the country music station? Carrie Underwood is asking Jesus to take the wheel or is belting out her tribute to the all American girl. But when was the last time you heard a Ruben Studdart ditty? And Taylor Hicks, the winner of year 5 was dropped by his record label.

With this years American Idol contests weeks from wrapping up and only one mediocre female contender left (Syesga Mercado), I almost have to wonder, does it really matter who wins this year? Because, if history repeats itself, the last that we hear of them will be the big finale.

All of the female winners have gone on to have some major success. Even Fantasia, who may not have crack the pop charts, is a force to be reckoned with on Broadway and an R&B star. Jordin is fast becoming a pop star, even doing a duet with Chris Brown on her next single. Kelly Clarkson is gaining popular and critical acclaim with each new hit and Carrie Underwood can do no wrong.

I wonder why that is? I think that maybe, just maybe, it has something do with it being more acceptable for a female to win what is basically a popularity contest disguise as a singing competition. For the girls, winning is a ticket straight to stardom. For the guys? You'd be better off finishing second, like Clay Aitkin did in the second season. He might not have a huge recording career but he's the darling of Seusical. And really, isn't his voice more suited for Broadway. And let's not forget third place winner Chris Daughtry.

With one last year's top rock albums, his band Daughtry will most likely be around for years to come. What I'd like to see is one of the guys come to this realization and with three left, beg and plead with the voting public not to vote for them. Then maybe they'd have a chance at a career. Because otherwise? Look for this year's winner of American Idol in a sales bin close to you.

Kelly Clarkson to return to 'American Idol' with Jason Aldean

Kelly Clarkson, the first winner of "American Idol" and its most successful alum, is set to perform on the FOX singing contest series next week.

The pop star, who will turn 29 later this month, will perform "Don't You Wanna Stay" with country singer Jason Aldean on the show on Thursday, April 14, which will also feature a performance from pop and R & B singer Rihanna, FOX said in a statement.

The 2010 song by Clarkson and Aldean is currently high on the country music charts and is the most-played track from an "American Idol" alum. The two also performed together at the 2010 CMA Awards in November.

Clarkson has performed on "American Idol" numerous times since she won the show in 2002. After her win, she released four studio albums and toured all over the world. She recently sang a medley of her hits, including "Miss Independent" and "Since U Been Gone," at Universal Studios' CityWalk in Los Angeles for "The Ellen DeGeneres Show." (See video below)

Rihanna performed on "American Idol" last year. This will be Aldean's first appearance on the show.

On Thursday, April 7, rocker Iggy Pop and "American Idol" alum Constantine Maroulis performed on "American Idol" and No Doubt singer Gwen Stefani made a guest appearance.

But the rock stars were overshadowed by the biggest shocker of the current 10th season - the elimination of former frontrunner Pia Toscano. According to online polls, including those on OnTheRedCarpet.com, she was voted most likely to win the FOX singing contest series. The show is now down to eight finalists, who will await their fate next week. They are: Stefano Langone, Jacob Lusk, James Durbin, Lauren Alaina, Casey Abrams, Scotty McCreery, Paul McDonald and Haley Reinhart.

What American Idol Has to Do With The Latest Karaoke Craze

Karaoke has been popular for many years, but the increasingly enormous popularity of American Idol has sparked an even greater interest in karaoke and drawn countless new addicts to its folds. It's been six years since the phenomenon known as Idol tapped into the airwaves and started people talking about an addictive new concept in Reality TV. And this addiction has fueled the continued addiction of many closet singers who have now come out of the closet.

It's easy to imagine how the producers conjured up the premise. They probably said, "Let's revisit the old talent show gig. However, this time, each of the contestants will have a family, a history, a home town and a personality hook that takes the viewer one step further. Let's make the audience become invested every week by making it be about more than just who has the best voice." And let's make sure we show the best and the worst in the auditions-so more people can relate. It's pretty much how most karaoke clubs are anyway-the best with the worst!

And so it happened that we came to love the Kellys and Clays, the Daughtrys and Underwoods, and even the William Hungs! We loved them because they each had a real life story and a way in which they connected with their audience and dealt with the critiques of the judges. We didn't just love them-we fell in love with them-because we were the ones who voted and helped them realize their American Dream. And we lived vicariously for our unrealized dreams. It's probably why karaoke is so popular-so many of us have the rock star dream! Through American Idol, we all lived that dream.

When Kelly Clarkson became the first winner, the show achieved its own instant success. Kelly won over her competitor Justin Guarini, but the two were viewed as America's sweethearts even after the show ended and a really bad movie starring the two of them came and went. After that, Kelly emerged as a celebrated pop performer in her own right.

Season two ended with the closest contest in the show's history with Rubin Studdard and Clay Aiken going head to head. There are some who claim that faulty phone company tactics affected the voting and that Clay was robbed of his rightful crown.

Seasons three and four saw two young gals cinch the title-each with their own distinctive styles--Fantasia and Carrie. There couldn't be two more different vocalists on the planet, yet they both hold the same title-American Idol. And Carrie has become a huge country star winning every award possible.

Taylor Hicks was season five's winner and he became number one by borrowing a little bit of everything from days gone by. Elvis, soul, harmonica, groove, Joe Cocker and Vegas, won the hearts of the American voters. In the last season, Jordin Sparks won the crown with her youthful vigor and gospel powerhouse voice.

Looking at American Idol one can see how the show has evolved and been improved upon, yet that it had the makings of a winner from the start. The shelf life for such a program is usually four years at most. At the top of its game going into season seven, how long will it continue to entertain and excite America? For as long as we all harbor that rock star dream. Long live American Idol. Long live karaoke!
